The Chicken Brick: Not Just for Chicken

A Winter Warmer for Aga and Food Lovers
There’s something comforting about slow cooking through the colder months. The heat of the Aga, the comforting scent of something rich and tender filling the kitchen when you have come home after a day’s work or a very muddy dog walk on the Somerset levels. At Muchelney Pottery, our Chicken Brick has long been a family favourite for the Sunday roast, producing the kind of golden, succulent chicken that needs nothing more than a little sea salt, thyme and a squeeze of lemon. But its talents go far beyond poultry.
As the nights draw in and the season turns to Bonfire Night and Christmas gatherings, the Chicken Brick comes into its own for slow, flavour-packed dishes, and few recipes capture that spirit better than Firecracker Brisket.

The Perfect Partner: Firecracker Brisket
We’ve taken inspiration from BBC Good Food’s Pulled Firecracker Brisket, a recipe bursting with spice and warmth, ideal for a long, slow, gentle cook. We replace the wine vinegar with some local cider vinegar from Somerset Cider Brandy.
Simply place your seasoned brisket into the Chicken Brick, add the rich, fiery sauce, and let time and heat do the work. Our wood-fired kitchenware gently holds and distributes heat, locking in flavour and moisture, while the lid creates a natural self-basting steam that leaves the beef so tender it falls apart with the touch of a fork. The result is deep, rich and wonderfully comforting – perfect for feeding a crowd or warming the family after a crisp evening outside watching fireworks.

Made for the Aga
For Aga owners, this is where the Chicken Brick truly shines. Once prepared, you can simply slide it into the bottom oven for the day, no stirring, no fuss, and return to find the most meltingly tender beef, infused with smoky spice and deep, savoury sweetness. It’s a dish that fills the kitchen with warmth and the rich flavours, perfect for sharing after a night around the bonfire or for feeding family and friends over the holidays.

Timeless Craft for Modern Cooking
Handmade here at Muchelney Pottery, each Chicken Brick is crafted from British clay using traditional techniques that have stood the test of time. Its natural clay body, which has been wood-fired in our kiln, cooks beautifully and carries with it an earthy functionality and elegance that moves seamlessly from oven to table. Whether you’re an Aga devotee or simply love the idea of slow, seasonal cooking, this is a piece to treasure. Beautiful on the table, dependable in the kitchen, and part of a long Somerset tradition of craft made for everyday life.
