The shop at Muchelney Pottery offers a wide selection of functional and decorative pottery, all crafted on-site by skilled artisans. From everyday mugs and bowls to stunning statement vases, each piece embodies the timeless craftsmanship and quality for which the Leach name is renowned.
Visitors can also browse a curated range of unique gifts, seasonal collections, and one-of-a-kind art pieces. With its peaceful setting alongside the working pottery and kiln, the shop provides a fascinating glimpse into this rich craft tradition.
The Kiln Shed
The kiln shed at Muchelney Pottery is the beating heart of the creative process, where raw clay is transformed into beautiful ceramics. Home to the traditional wood-fired ‘naborigama’ kiln, the shed is a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication that defines the pottery. The wood-fired kiln, in particular, is a marvel, creating rich, earthy tones and natural variations that make each piece truly unique.
Stepping into the kiln shed is like stepping into history. The warm, smoky scent and the sight of stacked pottery either waiting to be fired or freshly unpacked creates an atmosphere that feels both timeless and alive. Visitors can learn more about the firing process at open days where they can usually have a peek inside the kiln as it is being unpacked.
Each firing is the main event of three month’s work with up to 2,000 pots packed by hand into the chambers. A team of stokers then work around the clock feeding ‘the dragon’ with wood off-cuts. With every firing there is always a moment of anticipation and excitement when the kiln is ready to be opened. The final ‘toasty’ finish is the result of 60-foot flames ‘licking’ the surface of the pots through the 36 hours or more or hand-stoking. John loved this process and was always there with the crew as the wickets came down.
The Potters’ Workshop

The potters’ workshop at Muchelney Pottery is where creativity comes to life. This bustling space is filled with the tools of the trade – potter’s wheels, shelves lined with works in progress, and bags of locally sourced clay ready to be shaped.
The rhythmic hum of the wheel, the soft thud of the clay landing on the wheel head and the hands moulding the clay create a soothing soundtrack as Mark transforms raw materials into stunning ceramics. From shaping delicate vases to forming sturdy mugs, every piece is crafted with care and attention to detail.

The shop and gallery are open to the public, but if you would like to view the kiln shed and workshop please get in touch to arrange a private tour. Please note spaces are very limited due to the pressures of being a production pottery.
